The Shapiro Administration appears to be attempting to divert funds from a successful, decades-long programme that benefits pregnant women in a clear political attack on pregnancy centres, adoption agencies, and maternity homes throughout Pennsylvania.
In a recent development, Pennsylvania Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro has announced his intention to cancel the contract of Real Alternatives, a highly regarded organisation that administers the Commonwealth’s Pregnancy and Parenting Support Services programme.
When the Pennsylvania budget was passed earlier this summer, a line item was included for the programme. However, the Administration has now issued a request for applications for a programme that is decidedly different. This is not the life-affirming counselling and mentoring programme that has successfully served more than 350,000 women in its 27-year history.
The recently introduced women’s services programme fails to align with the clear historical context and legislative intent of the funding line, as well as the language of the fiscal code, which is a prerequisite for the disbursement of funds.
It is evident that Catholic Charities, maternity homes, and pregnancy support centres are being conveyed a clear and unambiguous message. The response to applicants was consistently negative, with the message conveyed that they were not eligible for consideration.
The Governor’s announcement has provoked a strong reaction in the Commonwealth, with thousands of Pennsylvanians contacting their state lawmakers to express their opposition to the cancellation of Real Alternatives’ contract.
However, it is imperative that we continue to advocate for legislative action to impede the Governor’s misguided plan.
