“My expectation that dedicating oneself to service would be a cross to bear has in fact been path to liberation”

This may appear to be a somewhat ambitious proposition, even for me. It is worth considering, however, that in the space of a couple of hours, I received via email a poem from a thoughtful young man and a link to a powerful story of dedication, determination, and devotion. Together, they prompted me to reconsider some long-held beliefs in a new light.

The poem is a synthesis of contemplative eloquence and impassioned indignation at the inhumanity of abortion. As I read the lines, which were filled with pain and a sense of betrayal, it reminded me of a two-sided truth that is so easy to overlook.

It is imperative that we never lose our resolve. It is our responsibility to ensure that the deaths of nearly 900,000 unborn babies annually are not reduced to a mere statistic, such as the Dow Jones average. It is of the utmost importance that our sense of indignation never be dulled.

It is crucial to recognize that each time an abortion is performed, the abortionist removes not only the body of a child, but also a small part of his own humanity. The act of abortion not only results in the death of the child, but also diminishes the humanity of the abortionist. A child was killed as a result of this action. Ultimately, the price the abortionist may pay may be even more significant.

I subsequently perused the narrative of a father of numerous children who have experienced significant challenges, and who has chosen to view these challenges as opportunities for triumph. The disabilities in question range from relatively mild to profound.

In the case of one of their daughters, the discovery of a heart murmur led to the identification of other medical issues and ultimately to a diagnosis of Down syndrome. As is often the case, the counseling that was offered to the couple encouraged them to abort.

The father writes, “For us, this was the second time facing a severely disabled child and the second time that the medical community would suggest the disposability of a life.” We were aware of this, however, as the experience of caring for Mary Beth led me in particular to an understanding of the reasons for suffering and the value of human life.

The father concludes with a sense of peace that I could only hope to attain if my family’s life were similarly challenging. “At times, relinquishing my preconceived notions about the trajectory of my life has been challenging and often painful,” he writes.

However, I discovered that when I finally relinquished my pursuit of meaning through the fulfillment of my personal desires, I was bestowed with a singular sense of tranquility and liberty. It is noteworthy that my initial assumption that dedicating oneself to service would be a challenging experience has, in fact, proven to be a pathway to liberation.
