The significance of a single life, particularly that of a child, in effecting change on a global scale cannot be overstated. This truth was brought home to me recently when I viewed an interview on a cable news program. The subject of the interview was a man who had served time in prison, had reformed his life, and was now engaged in assisting other men incarcerated to find renewed hope and meaning.
The man, who had been raised in a gang-driven culture, attributed his transformation to his daughter. When he held her in his arms, he experienced a profound shift in his perspective, which ultimately led to his redemption. This illustrates how the presence of a child can profoundly influence the trajectory of history for the better. Children compel us to embrace our more benevolent instincts, prompting us to respond to the world with compassion and love.
Even the most hardened criminal can perceive the divine spark in the eyes of their child. As we commence the new year, it is imperative that we intensify our efforts to safeguard the most vulnerable among us—those who impart lessons that facilitate our growth as individuals. Each life is of equal value and significance in the cosmic context. When the life of a preborn child is terminated through abortion, a significant void is created in the universe.
Such a loss, moreover, impoverishes us all.
