Student essay contests—just one more way National Right to Life affiliates are reaching out to the next generation

Published on

One of the most eagerly awaited events on our academic calendar is the launch of our student pro-life essay and oratory contests.

The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation has for decades bestowed awards upon young people who have demonstrated a courageous and persuasive ability to convey the pro-life message in both written and spoken forms.

One year, our essay contest attracted more than 600 essays which I read myself. I was humbled by the truths expressed by those so young.

Last year, we were gratified to see our oratory contestant, Clare, secure first place at the National Right to Life contest held at the convention in Pittsburgh. In the home of the Steelers, Clare courageously addressed the unfair manner in which pregnancy resource centres are often characterised by the abortion industry. Clare’s demeanor exuded a sense of assurance and fervor that evoked a standing ovation from the audience, a testament to the admiration and appreciation she had earned.

It is impossible to remain unmoved when one witnesses students articulating with such eloquence the development of the preborn child, the dangers of abortion to mothers, and the heroic role of the pro-life movement in our society.

On each occasion that I observe a young orator participating in a pro-life competition or read a student’s essay advocating for the pro-life cause, I am reminded of the admirable qualities that are evident in our younger pro-life advocates. They exhibit a wisdom that is beyond their years and an idealism that is unparalleled.

Students in the state of Pennsylvania are invited to submit essays or oratory entries for our forthcoming contests. Further details can be found at www.paprolife.org. Student contests represent yet another avenue through which National Right to Life affiliates are endeavouring to engage with the younger generation and encourage them to embrace a culture of life.

Daniel Miller is responsible for nearly all of National Right to Life News' political writing.

With the election of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, Daniel Miller developed a deep obsession with U.S. politics that has never let go of the political scientist. Whether it's the election of Joe Biden, the midterm elections in Congress, the abortion rights debate in the Supreme Court or the mudslinging in the primaries - Daniel Miller is happy to stay up late for you.

Daniel was born and raised in New York. After living in China, working for a news agency and another stint at a major news network, he now lives in Arizona with his two daughters.
